| The
Demaree United Methodist Church, which recently celebrated its
125th anniversary, was formed on December 30, 1882
as The Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The name Demaree was given to the church
when a gentleman by the name of W. L. Demaree of Rushville, Illinois
donated a total of $1,000 toward the building of the church after
the union of The Methodist Episcopal Church, The Methodist Episcopal
Church, South and the Methodist Protestant Church. The official
name given to the church was The Demaree Memorial Methodist Church. The Memorial was
dropped from the church name with the union of the Methodist Church
and the Evangelical United Brethren Church in 1967 and became known
with the name Demaree United Methodist Church. The church has a long
history of revivals and for sending many into the ministry
from these meetings. On July 1, 2009, Demaree became a part of a
four-church parish, which consists of Gilead UMC, Odin UMC, Demaree, and
Shattuc UMC. Taking the first letter of each churches name, the parish is
named GOD'S parish. Each church has its own Sunday service, each at a
different time, so that Rev. Widicus and Lay Speaker R.C. Menten may preach
at all the churches.
